This was a great opportunity to dig on a new farm close to a Roman road for club members. It was a beautiful day but the recent heat waves had made the ground really hard and the stones were challenging. Mercians are never daunted, though, and we set out with determination. Some lovely finds came up and a few detectorists managed a significant number of finds, while others didn’t do so well. By lunchtime the temperature had risen and most Mercians were flagging. After, some good conversation, with the packed lunches eaten, and Deb’s TWO cakes had been demolished, most admitted defeat and left. A few stalwarts remained a little longer and found a few more items.

Three lovely and very different finds were nominated for Find of the Day:

In third place was Jack’s bottle opener

In second place was Rob’s Charles II hammered

But in first place, by a significant margin, was Bill’s beautiful silver thimble. Congratulations Bill!
