The second day of our annual weekender began well with sunny skies and optimism. Some early finds encouraged us all - then the first heavy shower came at eleven o’clock. Some made a dash for cover, while others decided they were already wet through and might as well keep going. The storm came in after midday with a lightening show and thunder to accompany it. It might have dampened clothing but not the spirits of Mercians. Much fun and laughter ensued as we gathered under the gazebo for shelter and to eat our packed lunches. Lee ruefully told us how he’d been trying to deter members from carrying metal shovels over their shoulders while detecting during lightning strikes, to little avail! Many of us called it a day after lunch and went home to dry out but the hardy carried on regardless. Huge thanks are due to the admin who put so much effort into organising the weekend for us all: they do such a great job and look after us so well!
There were some lovely finds and several will be making their way to the Finds Liaison Officer! So there will be quite a few photos to enjoy for this entry.
Alex found this Byzantine coin - a Magnentius coin (ruling Italy, Gaul, Britannia and parts of Balkans 350- 353 CE) . These coins were taken out of circulation after his demise and this one was possibly buried in the same way many were around the empire.
Amanda found a medieval serpent buckle, something she had on her bucket list
Rich found a beautiful Roman hair pin in remarkable condition
And Jack found a very large fibula
Our Find of the Day for the second day of our weekender goes to Barry for his marvellous Roman earring - now registered on the Portable Antiquities Scheme site. Congratulations Barry!
