A new farm with over 40 acres to offer on this first visit. The weather was changeable but the morning provided dry conditions and the digging was lovely. A good turnout with around 40 detectorists enthusiastically covering the field.
There were some lovely finds: fibulas, hammered coins, silver coins, some other interesting coins, a dagger pommel and some lovely buckles among them.
However, there was one stand out find that excited everyone and eclipsed all others. It was the only nomination by members when it came to nominating Find of the Day. It was Greg’s Mark Antony (Marcus Antonius) silver denarius from 31 BCE. These were known as galley or legionnaire denarii and this one is from the thirteenth legion. It shows the eagle, representing Jupiter, between two standards. It was minted in a travelling mint probably in Greece while Mark Antony was encamped with his army. This coin dates from the legendary time of his relationship with Cleopatra of Egypt.
Congratulations on both a wonderful find and your first Find of the Day, Greg!
