It was a great turnout to a favourite farm that has hosted the Mercians a few times over the last three years. It was a good illustration of how different the finds can be on different parts of the same farm. Our last dig there brought up lots of pistol shot and evidence of the civil war. This time, the finds were quite different.
The weather was cold but largely dry and the digging was great, so when the finds were slow to come up and the ferrous signals and scrap showed up, spirits continued to be good.
There were coins, tokens, buckles, weights, a fob seal, a fibula and a fair deal of silver coins. As this was the end of the membership year, it brought to a close the silver table and the position at the top was contested right up until the last moment! Rob had led the board ahead of Amanda for some weeks and they entered the last week with Rob just one coin ahead, but Amanda dug up two silver coins and Rob didn’t find any (a rarity for Rob), meaning Amanda was crowned in 1st place, Rob in 2nd, and Lee in 3rd. Well done guys - many of us are in awe of you!
When it came to find of the day, we had some interesting finds to consider:
Bob’s unusual partial pot (?)

Alan’s lion’s foot

But there was never any question which find was going to win the vote and be crowned unanimously as Find of the Day: it was Rich’s amazing Roman toggle. Congratulations Rich!
