After some weeks without digs, the Mercians were back on track, thanks to the hard work of the admin team in finding land available at a challenging time in the farming calendar. It was brilliant to be back together and the day was thankfully less hot than it had been in the days leading up to the dig. The ground was not too hard, in spite of the recent heatwaves, and once you were through the grass, the spade went in quite well.
There were a number of interesting finds, among them a pair of nutcrackers, two modern rings - one silver, one gold - a lovely buckle, an escutcheon, a fibula and a coat hook among them. Here are some of the finds:

However it was Jane’s day with two of her finds being the only ones nominated for Find of the Day.
After the vote, in second place was her Roman seal box lid

In first place was her strap junction. Congratulations Jane!
