A brilliant day returning to this farm where the rain had greatly improved the digging conditions. We were spoiled for choice with finds! Hammereds, fibulas, pistol shot, net weights, buckles, silver coins …and a lovely gold item, but more on that later.

The wind made a serious appearance part way through the day, making the toilet tent dance and blowing hair in the faces of those of us who have hair. Mercians are not to be deterred by a bit of weather, though.

There was quite a list of finds to nominate for Find of the Day, but in the end it came down to four very different finds that Mercians chose to vote for.

In fourth place was Greg’s beautiful commonwealth coin

In third place was Amanda’s wonderful chape

In second place was Izaak’s fabulous gold ring - or is it a seal matrix?

But in first place by a fair margin was Lee’s exquisite Scottish penny, Alexander III. Congratulations Lee!
