We were all keen to take part in this second visit to the farm that gave so many amazing finds on Easter Sunday. It was a good turnout and the atmosphere was great. The hot weather over so many days made it hard digging, though, and some of us found it a bit tough on our bodies and had to admit defeat and give up a bit early. Nonetheless, there were some lovely finds and another lovely cake from Debbie went down well.
There were five nominations for Find of the Day: Robert’s cut half hammered coin, Lee’s Elizabeth I hammered, Pete’s Henry V hammered, Tom’s Elizabeth I shilling and Bill’s Saxon escutcheon.
After the members’ vote the result was:
In third place was Pete’s Henry V
Pete kindly donated this to the farmer as it was his mother-in-law’s birthday on the day of the dig and she is a retired historian and coin collector.
In second place was Tom’s Elizabeth I shilling
In first place, though, was Bill’s fascinating Saxon escutcheon. He’s taking advice from the Finds Liason Officer and is looking forward to discovering more about it.
Congratulations Bill!
